Lake Water Quality

The water quality of Lake Gatlin remains very good. The work that the EPD did two years ago has been nothing but outstanding. For those that may not know or have forgotten, the Lake Gatlin HOA was able to convince the EPD that Lake Gatlin was a perfect size lake to use an ALUM treatment on. Alum is a product that was sprayed on the waters surface without harm to the fish or humans. The Alum has a specific gravity that is just a fraction heavier than that of water and collects impurities in the water as it settles to the bottom.

Two treatments were applied; one in Dec. 2004 and the other in April 2005. The treatments worked. Our water quality has never been better. You can now not only see the bottom of the lake in many areas, but also bass beds.

The Conway Nav Board, as well as the EPD, continue to monitor the lake water quality and if we see that it is deteriorating, we will once again respond.

Lake Gatlin was also used as a test lake for the planting of special vegetation by the State Fisheries Dept. It was felt that if the fish population could increase, then it would stand to reason that the lake water quality would also improve. We have had several plantings to date at no cost to you. The EPD feels that these plantings have also contributed to improving the water quality.
